BHS Hockey Team Remains Unbeaten With 4-2 Win Over Stoneham

Blog Post By Grant Gough

It was a great game vs Stoneham in Stoneham. It was much different atmosphere than the Ice Palace noise-wise. The fans wee still there for the team and the team looked good, pulling out a 4-2 win against a strong Stoneham team. Goals scorers were Neil Pandolfo, Dan Sullivan, Peter Milinazzo, and Ryan Collins . This is a team with skill and they will continue to use it throughout the year. The Red Devils (4-0-1) will travel to Belmont on Saturday for a 2:30 contest.

Boys Hockey Routs Reading 8-0, Raises Last Year's Banner

Blog Post By Grant Gough:

It was a huge win for the boys tonight over Reading by the score of 8 to 0. The team came out knowing it was going to be a fight but took it to the Rockets by jumping to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period and never letting up. Neil Pandolfo paced the offense with a hat trick while Once Chris Russo posted his second straight shutout in goal.

After the first period, the Red Devils enjoyed a nice ceremony to raise last year's championship banner. For a look at the ceremony check out the clips on the Burlington High Principal's Blog.

This year's squad is starting to look like it has the potential to be a great team as well. They will take on Stoneham on Wednesday.

BHS Icemen Rout Melrose 7-0

BHS Boys Hockey Downs Billerica 6-3

Post By Grant Gough:

It was a great out of league match up between Burlington and Billerica. Billerica came out strong with a first period goal but BHS answered right back as the first period ended with a 3-3 tie. The Devils got two quick second period goals from Chris Irwin and Joey Centrella to take control of the game. Other BHS goal scorers were Ryan Collins, Steve Mattos, and Neil Pandolfo.

Chris Russo had another solid game in net. With a few starters sidelined, it was a great game to test the team's depth. Come watch the Devils (1-0-1) take on Melrose this Wednesday at the Ice Palace in their home opener.

BHS Boys Swimming

Post By Coach Papagno:

On 12/16/2009 the BHS Boys Swim / Dive Team was suppose to face off against Belmont HS in a duel meet. However; due to issues with Belmont's pool this meet was postponed. On 12/18/2009 the boys faced off against Haverhill HS. at Shawsheen Tech's pool. Each swimmer came very prepared for this contest and I was able to see a terrific effort in all of them They were very enthusiastic and worked as a team. From the first even to the last I saw a, "Can Do" attitude with each of them. There were many stand outs in this meet. To name a few ....
In the 200 Medley Relay - Jay Baia, Nick Rose, Captain's Shane Ryan and Ryan Gilpin blazed a path for others to follow with a time of 1:59.09. This is only three seconds away from North Sectional Championship qualification time.

In the 50 Free Style - Shane Ryan took first place with a time of 24.59 a personal best.
In the 100 Butterfly event - Ryan Gilpin narrowly missed first place by one half of a second with a personal best time of 1:04.19. Ryan performed this event like a truck going through a wall. His effort was extraordinary and I only see him getting faster and stronger as the season goes.
In the 100 Free style event - Nick Rose took second place in this even with a time of 59.47 another personal best. Not bad for the first meet of the year.

The 200 Free Style Relay event - The team of Jon Dirusso, Shane Ryan, Ryan Gilpin, and Nick Rose took first place with an outstanding time of 1:45.65. Missing North Sectional Qualifying time by three (3) seconds. (This time they vow to break by the end of the season.)
In the 100 Breast Stroke event - Captain Shane Ryan placed first with a time of 1:12.08.
Although this team had a great first meet of the year. We lost to the score of Haverhill 101 - Burlington 74. Our next meet will be 12/22/2009 at 4 pm. We will be hosting Andover HS at the Shawsheen Tech. pool @4 PM.

As their Head Coach I am very proud of what they have accomplished in such a short time. I know it is only the first meet of the long season. However; they are looking to be a strong team with a great amount of potential. Happy Holidays and always.... "Go Big Red."

Boys Hockey Team Battles To Tie With Winchester In Opener

Post By Grant Gough -

The season opening game last night against Winchester was so intense it was an unbelievable experience. The crowd started filling in around 5:45 and the team took the ice around 5:50 with everyone screaming and yelling for the team.

The game did not disappoint as every minute of the up and down game was intense. The Devils looked good as senior Neil Pandolfo scored two goals while senior Chris Russo stood on his head throughout the contest with some incredible saves.

The entire team put forth a great performance, taking every minute like it was their last game. Fortunately, it was just their first and they have 19 regular season games left. The next game is Saturday night at 8 p.m. in Billerica. Get on the bandwagon early! The team is going to have a great season.

Congratulations to the Football and Soccer Cheerleaders

At yesterday's Medford Invitational Cheerleading Competition the Football Cheerleaders placed 1st in Div. 3Soccer Cheerleaders placed 3rd in the JV division which turned out to be the toughest division with 8 teams competing.
As a side note, the soccer cheerleaders were faced with redoing their entire routine on Saturday morning due to two cheerleaders out with the flu. They did a fabulous job and I'm so proud of their 3rd place trophy out of 8 very good teams.
Both teams will be off to Middlesex league competition (football competes and soccer exhibits) on Wednesday at 6:00 at Reading High School. I hope we can encourage all football and soccer players to come out to Reading High School to support their cheerleaders.

With the conclusion of the regular season, the boys and girls team finish the season with a 6-3 record. Freshman Volleyball Continues to Impress

by Mark Steinbach, FR
Not enough people are talking about what has been a remarkable story in BHS athletics, this year: the dominance of the girls’ freshmen volleyball team. As of mid-October the freshmen volleyball still has not lost a game, posting an impressive and somewhat surprising record of 7-0.

“We are successful because we communicate well with each other. This allows us to set up plays that win points,” says setter Nadia Eshraghi. “We have good serves that give us aces many times.” The team seems to perform and execute in every important aspect of the sport, serving and setting effectively, while also establishing good communication on the court. With Burlington lacking an organized youth volleyball league for girls and the program being rather new to BHS, this success seems to have come out of nowhere. Is it a surprise? “Yeah, it is a surprise,” says setter Lauren Utley, “but we just keep getting better, so now we expect to win every time we take the court.”

The improvement of this team certainly has to be traced back partly to the coach, Pat Magee. “He’s a great tip-giver,” says Nadia, “He tells us how to improve on certain skill areas and when he sees a problem, he works until it’s fixed.” Says Lauren, “He gives us all equal playing time and that brings us together because no one thinks they’re better than anyone else on the team.”

Overall, the success of this freshmen team is a very good sign for the still young volleyball program at BHS. If this dominance continues, the future looks very bright for the program in the near-future and beyond.

Game Recap: Boys Varsity Soccer @ Wakefield 9/29

The Boys Varsity Soccer team earned their first victory of the season on Tuesday night with a 3-1 victory over Wakefield. AC Castelluccio started off the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 10th minute of play. Tyler Baczewski scored in the 35th minute off of an assist from Ohan Manoukian, bringing the team into the half with a 2-0 lead.

Wakefield came out of the break and pressured the BHS defense, creating a direct kick opportunity outside of the penalty box just two minutes into the second half, and converted on the ensuing kick to bring them back within a goal. The BHS defense responded, and continued to thwart the opposition from that point on, being lead by Jake Fahey, Tom Murphy, Mike Boeri, Trevor Dutton, and Goalie Juan Aguilar. The Red Devils finally turned the momentum around in the 72nd minute, when Lucas Restivo found a streaking Tyler Baczewski who placed the ball in the right corner of the net to seal the victory.

In the earlier game, the JV Boys team blanked Wakefield 3-0 on goals by Mike Brown, Tad Pierre-Louis, and Derek Skinner, with solid goal keeping by Joe Renaud and David Whitney.
