2010-2011 Girls Basketball Preview

After a 1-19 season last year the Burlington High School Girls Basketball Team will try to make huge improvements. After getting a new coach and fellow teacher at the school Pam Coppola should help out. They have most of their team back from last year. They have matched their win total all of last year in the first game of 2010 by beating Watertown. The four captains are Rachel Joyce, Katharine Trahan, Kaitlyn Mornewick, and Kayla Collucci. he season looks much brighter this year for the girls.

2010-2011 Boys Basketball Preview

The Burlington High Boys Basketball team finished 8-12 a year ago. They have 6 returning players that played significant minutes on last years team. Senior guards Zach Hurynowicz and Ryan Putney lead the team this year. They were the two leading scorers on the team last year. The other four returning players are four juniors.Greg Sheridan, Connor Gallivan, Joe Renaud, and Mark Melanson are the juniors that come back and try to help out Hurynowicz and Putney by providing some more scoring options and good defense. The team wants to make the tournament and improve on their record from a year ago. The unusual thing about the team is that there is three freshman on the team. Shane Farley, Mickey Lyons, and Christian Mornewick. The other players on the team are David Whitney, Steven Xu, Jeff Manni, Austin Robinson, Cam Frank, and Marcus Odiah. The team lacks height but is a good shooting team and is quick off the ball.

Red Devils of the Week for Week Ending October 16, 2010

Holly Brouillette
Caroline Peterson

Field Hockey

Holly and Caroline both had an amazing game against Melrose. Burlington beat Melrose 4-2, with much of that being due to Holly and Caroline’s solid stick handling. Holly earned an outstanding 4 points against Melrose with 2 goals and 2 assists, and Caroline earned 2 points. Caroline scored the first goal of the game, which was assisted by Holly; the two played great together, utilizing the give-and go, the entire game. Holly scored the second goal of the game and was assisted this time by Caroline. The final goal of the game was scored by Holly and she also got the assist on that goal. Caroline played great defense as well, as Burlington worked to hold Melrose in the last 6 minutes of the game.

Football vs. Billerica

The Burlington vs Billerica game was a typical battle for both of these teams. With the much larger school Billerica ranked 7th in the state being a heavy favorite Burlington still managed to almost pull out a victory but the last drive stalled and the game ended Billerica 35-Burlington 27. The game started with plenty of fireworks as the first play of the season saw Burlington's Sophomore Tailback Marcus O'daih go 74 yards for a touchdown and had Burlington out to a quick lead. The Gatorade player of the year last year Quarterback Nick Laspada from Billerica was the difference all night as he managed to make big play after big play and threw 3 touchdowns and ran for another. Nick Ciardi From Burlington had a fine night with 4 catches and an interception as Burlington's Quarterback Gregg Sheridan hung tough running and throwing well all night for us. Kyle Shields added 2 touchdowns while Marcus O'daih showed huge signs of a very bright future with 11 carries for 157 yards and a touchdown for Burlington. Jonathan Dube, Dalton Barrucci and Joe Hoffman played well on the line for Burlington's defense as We came up just short in this one. All in all it was a great effort by the huge underdog Burlington as we look to get our first win this week vs Arlington another very large Division 1 School.

Girls Soccer Update - First Three Games

We beat Watertown 6-1 led by Jodi Han who had a hat trick. We also had goals by Miceala Christy, Ashley Steadman, and Megan Packard. We played a good game to start the season.

Melrose was a zero zero tie. We had several scoring chances including a penalty kick in the first half. Their goalie played outstanding and did a great job of not letting any goals in. Our goalie and defense led by Kierstin Merlino, Abbey Joyce, Renee Iodice, and Megan Packard did a great job earning our first shut out of the season.

The third game was reading. We tied one to one. We gave up a goal in the first half on a break away. We controled most of the play and in the second half jodi han found the back of the net on a great shot on the left side of the 18. We are now 1-0-2.

Off to a good start.

Boys Soccer Update

The Varisty Boys Soccer team continued its early season success with a 1-0 victory at Reading on Tuesday. After a disappointing first half, the Red Devils came out in the second half and dominated the ball, finally scoring with six minutes remaining. The goal was scored by freshmen Vassilli Vakalfotis. Peter DeBarros had a strong game in net and gets credit for the shutout.

The win brings the Red Devils to 3-0 on the season, after early victories against Watertown (1-0) and Melrose (1-0). Lucas Restivo scored in each game, with assists recorded by Kyle Sullivan and Tyler Baczewski. The Red Devils play Stoneham on Thursday at Francis Wyman.

Assists were also had by Holly Brouillette and Kerri.

On defense, strong games were had by center midfielder Jillian Mazure, who drove and carried the ball well. Mary Broza and Melissa Baumgartner played extremely well with one another in the backfield and did well keeping the ball in Melrose’s zone. Sara Walsh made a couple of great clears out of Burlington’s defensive zone, and Stacy and Kelly Howe looked good at midfield.

The Burlington girls’ JV basketball team currently holds an undefeated 5-0 record. Burlington started the season with comfortable wins against Winchester and Watertown before challenges came against Melrose, Reading and Stoneham.
Burlington showed their discipline against Winchester and managed to shake off an aggressive Watertown squad. Tight defense was the key to both games as Burlington kept the Sachems scoreless in the fourth quarter and held the Raiders to two field goals throughout the game.
Burlington faced a decorated program in Melrose, but the Lady Devils were up to the challenge and shocked the home crowd. Burlington struck first with two free throws from Miranda Woods, however the Lady Devils were held scoreless the rest of the quarter as the Red Raiders built a 10-2 lead. Burlington played even with Melrose in the second quarter, but the deficit remained at 7 going into the half. The Lady Devils climbed back in the third quarter by clamping down on defense, while staying aggressive on the offensive end. Katie Han hit a three-pointer drown the stretch and Burlington iced the game by running out the clock for the 32-30 win. Clean defense and free throws were the difference makers in the game, as Burlington committed six less fouls and got to the line nine more times than Melrose.
Reading visited two days later with the most size of any team Burlington had faced. The two teams played even in the second and the Lady Devils held onto a one point lead at the half. Reading took over in the third quarter by switching to a trapping press and zone, but Burlington adjusted to both. The Lady Devils managed to shoot 4 for 5 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, while solid defense under the basket from Emily Miliano and on the wings by Erin Murphy held the Rockets to one field goal for the 29-23 victory.
Burlington had its greatest scare in Stoneham after their two week game hiatus during winter break. The Lady Devils started slow and found themselves down after the first quarter. However they bounced back in the second, scoring 12 points and holding the Spartans to four, to take a three point lead at the half. Burlington wouldn’t score a field goal in the third quarter, but shot 6 for 8 from the line to stay even with Stoneham at 26 going into the last quarter. The game remained close, with Abby Joyce contributing offensively throughout the contest. The Lady Devils couldn’t capitalize on a one and one situation with less than a minute remaining and clinging to a two point lead. The Spartans were able to draw a foul and the resulting two shoot bonus tied the game to force overtime. Burlington sent in fresh legs for the 4 extra minutes and they were the difference makers as the tired Spartans began to foul and the Lady Devils were able to pull away by shooting 6 for 8 from the free throw line. Christina Raso was the only Lady Devil to play the final minutes of regulation and overtime, and she took advantage by hitting 3 of her 4 free throws to add to the 42-36 win.
Burlington’s success comes from tight defense and a balanced offensive attack, as each game has featured eight or more players scoring and different offensive leaders. The Lady Devils hope to keep their streak alive against Belmont on Friday, avenging two losses to the Marauders last season.

Boys Swimming Results From Chelmsford Meet

On 01/08/2010 the Burlington High School Swim team took on the perenial power house of Chelmsford H.S. Lions. The Lions are a large team that swims year round, however the boys of the Red Devils took them on in stride. During this swim meet the Red Devils only took one (1) first place finish and that was in the 100 Meter Breast Stroke Event. Junior Shane Ryan won this event with a time of 1:13.08. This time was not his personal best however; it was more than enough to beat Chelmsford HS breaststroker Kim Yie who's time was 1:15.83.
During this swim meet the Red Devils performed like a team. They cheered each other on and they managed to keep their competitiveness and spirit high on this date. However; they fell to the Lions to the score of 97 to 70. Our next meet is on monday 01/11/2010 against Reading High School - Red Rockets. This meet will be held at the Shawsheen Tech.
